Healey was wounded in the leg, but he refused to be evacuated. He led his men in a fierce counterattack that drove the enemy back. For his actions, Healey was awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest award for valor in the U.S. military.

After the war, Healey returned home a hero. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star, and he was given a ticker-tape parade in New York City. Healey used his newfound fame to speak out against the war and to help other veterans. He also became a successful businessman and a motivational speaker.

Michael Healey died in 2015 at the age of 71. He is survived by his wife, two children, and four grandchildren. He is remembered as one of the most courageous and decorated soldiers in American history.
