In Getting Ready for College, Careers, and the Common Core, a synthesis of research and practice from both education and industry provides the field with insights into important issues in education policy and practice as they relate to college and career readiness. The book begins by laying out a vision of college and career readiness that includes a set of academic and non-academic skills and dispositions that all students should possess by the time they graduate from high school. This vision is based on the belief that all students have the potential to succeed in college and careers, and that it is the responsibility of schools to provide them with the support and opportunities they need to do so.

The book is divided into three parts:

  • Part I provides an overview of the college and career readiness movement and its implications for education policy and practice.
  • Part II examines the research on college and career readiness and identifies the key factors that contribute to student success.
  • Part III presents a number of case studies that illustrate how schools and districts are implementing college and career readiness reforms.

Getting Ready for College, Careers, and the Common Core is a valuable resource for anyone who is interested in improving college and career readiness for all students. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the research and practice on this important topic, and it offers a number of practical recommendations for schools and districts.

Review by Stephanie Pilkington

As a doctoral student at the University of Northern Colorado, I am constantly looking for ways to improve my understanding of the complex issues facing education today. When I came across Getting Ready for College, Careers, and the Common Core, I was immediately drawn to its promise of providing a synthesis of research and practice from both education and industry. I was not disappointed.

The book begins by laying out a clear and concise vision of college and career readiness. This vision is based on the belief that all students have the potential to succeed in college and careers, and that it is the responsibility of schools to provide them with the support and opportunities they need to do so. This vision is supported by a wealth of research, which the authors present in a clear and accessible way.

The book then goes on to examine the key factors that contribute to college and career readiness. These factors include academic skills, such as reading, writing, and mathematics; non-academic skills, such as critical thinking and problem solving; and dispositions, such as grit and perseverance. The authors provide a comprehensive overview of the research on these factors, and they offer a number of practical recommendations for schools and districts.

The final part of the book presents a number of case studies that illustrate how schools and districts are implementing college and career readiness reforms. These case studies provide valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities of implementing these reforms. They also offer a number of promising practices that can be replicated by other schools and districts.

Overall, Getting Ready for College, Careers, and the Common Core is a valuable resource for anyone who is interested in improving college and career readiness for all students. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the research and practice on this important topic, and it offers a number of practical recommendations for schools and districts.
