Nina Mingya Powles' debut novel, Magnolia, is a haunting and moving story that explores the themes of memory, loss, and the power of nature. The novel follows the story of young Magnolia who, after the death of her grandmother, returns to her family's ancestral home in rural China. There, she uncovers a dark family secret that has been hidden for generations.

Magnolia is a complex and well-developed character. She is a young woman who is struggling to come to terms with her grandmother's death and her own place in the world. She is also haunted by memories of her childhood, which are both happy and painful. As she delves deeper into her family's past, she begins to understand the reasons for her grandmother's silence and the secrets that have kept her family apart.

The novel is set in rural China, and Powles does a beautiful job of capturing the beauty and the harshness of the landscape. The natural world plays an important role in the story, and it is often used as a metaphor for Magnolia's own inner journey. The novel is also rich in Chinese culture and history, and Powles provides a fascinating glimpse into a world that is often unfamiliar to Western readers.

Magnolia is a beautifully written and deeply moving novel. It is a story that will stay with you long after you finish reading it. Powles is a talented writer with a unique voice, and I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys literary fiction.
