Gladstone was born in Liverpool, England, in 1809. He was the son of a wealthy merchant and was educated at Eton College and the University of Oxford. After graduating from Oxford, Gladstone entered politics and was elected to the House of Commons in 1832.

Gladstone served in several cabinet positions under Prime Ministers Lord Palmerston and Lord Russell. In 1868, he became Prime Minister for the first time. During his first term, Gladstone oversaw the passage of the First Irish Land Act, which gave tenants in Ireland greater rights.

Gladstone served as Prime Minister again from 1880 to 1885, from 1886 to 1892, and from 1892 to 1894. During these terms, he introduced a number of important reforms, including the Second Irish Land Act, the Education Act of 1870, and the Third Reform Act, which extended the vote to many working-class men.

Gladstone was a devout Christian and a strong believer in social justice. He was a vocal advocate for the poor and the working class. He also supported a number of religious causes, including the abolition of slavery and the disestablishment of the Church of Ireland.

Gladstone was a complex and controversial figure. He was admired by many for his intelligence, eloquence, and dedication to public service. However, he was also criticized for his strong-willed personality and his tendency to overwork himself.
